The Southwestern softball team opens its season Friday, Feb. 3, against Pittsburg State of Kansas. The team is competing at the Southeastern Regional Invitational in Durant the first weekend of the season.
The SWOSU team is led by Kim Maher, who is going into her first season as the head coach. Maher is just the fourth coach in program history.
Maher brings a lot of knowledge and experience to the team. She is a former member of the US Olympic and National teams from 1994-1999, winning a gold medal at the 1996 Olympics. Maher was also the head softball coach at Purdue University where she compiled 240 wins from 2006-2013.
Senior right fielder Tori Hawk welcomed the change.
“I am excited going into my last season with the new coach,” Hawk said.
“I feel like she is pushing us returners harder than what we are used to and pushing the freshmen to be able to compete against girls who already have experience at this level.”
The Southwestern team has 11 seniors on the roster this season and are looking to improve its 2016 record of 15-27.
